Ocean Circulation on Enceladus with a High- versus Low-salinity Ocean

چکیده
Abstract Previous studies that have considered the ocean circulation on Enceladus generally assumed salinity to be Earth-like. However, according observations and geochemical constraints, of Enceladus’s is likely lower, importantly, it probably low enough reverse sign thermal expansivity. We investigate stratification using a combination theoretical arguments simulations MITgcm. find if high, whole unstratified, convection dominates entire ocean. enough, there exists stratified layer in upper ocean, whose thickness depends magnitude turbulent vertical diffusivity, which remains poorly constrained. Such can suppress flux heat tracers, thereby affecting ice shell leading tracer mixing timescale across at least hundreds years. This inconsistent with previous estimate several years, based size detected silica nanoparticles plumes, us conclude either higher than previously suggested or interpretation nanoparticle has reconsidered.

A Mathematical Model for Indian Ocean Circulation in Spherical Coordinate
In recent years, the Indian Ocean (IO) has been discovered to have a much larger impact on climate variability than previously thought. This paper reviews processes in which the IO is, or appears to be, actively involved. We begin the mathematical model with a pattern for summer monsoon winds. Three dimensional temperature and velocity fields are calculated analytically for the ocean forced by ...
متن کاملOcean Circulation
The ocean moderates the Earth's climate due to its vast capacity to store and transport heat; the influence of the large-scale ocean circulation on changes in climate is considered in this chapter. The ocean experiences both buoyancy forcing (through heating/cooling and evaporation/precipitation) and wind forcing. Almost all ocean forcing occurs at the surface, but these changes are communicate...

Volume 1, The Earth system: physical and chemical dimensions of global environmental change, pp 557–579 Ocean circulation is one of the major elements of climate, moving heat, freshwater, nutrients and dissolved gases. Ocean circulation at the largest spatial scales and long time scales contains many elements that are in common in the different oceans. Understanding the processes that drive the...
متن کاملThermohaline Ocean Circulation
The thermohaline circulation is that part of the ocean circulation which is driven by fluxes of heat and freshwater across the sea surface and subsequent interior mixing of heat and salt. The term thus refers to a driving mechanism. Important features of the thermohaline circulation are deep water formation, spreading of deep waters partly through deep boundary currents, upwelling and near-surf...
